Kids activities

Are your kids in dance? Or soccer?

Do they take music lessons? Or gymnastics? Or play basketball?

What about swim lessons?

How old were they when they started activities?

My son, who is 5 1/2, takes gymnastics two evenings a week. We absolutely love it. I love it mainly because he loves it. But I also love it because it's a positive, challenging activity for him. It's something for us to look forward to twice a week. And it's something we both leave feeling good about.

Last night, I noticed a handful of 3- and 4-year-olds going into a class at my son's gym. It made me think that my daughter would like gymnastics, too. I know she would. But she's only 20 months old.

Too young, right?

Or not?

What's the best age to start children in an activity and how much is too much? What have you done?

Josie Loza: 10 must-see summer movies
If there's one film I'm excited for this summer, it's Disney Pixar's "Brave." The 3-D film is about a fiery, red-head princess named Merida. She's a headstrong girl born of a royal family in the Highlands of Scotland. She's not a hoity-toity girl but a warrior princess. "Oh, yeah!" my 4-year-old Alejandra will shout at my laptop screen. We've watched the movie trailer on YouTube about a dozen times. The film doesn't release until June 22. So, we've been busy at home pretending we're rebels alongside Merida. Merida's storyline: She rebels against her parents' efforts to marry her off, preferring to master the art of archery. Alejandra's storyline: Boys are gross. Girls rock. Oh, yeah! And she's trying to master the art of archery. What can I say? My girl has an imagination. Make sure you click the headline to see the World-Herald's Top 10 summer movie list.
