LINCOLN — Norfolk attorney David Copple announced Tuesday that he would run for the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
He seeks the northeast Nebraska seat to be vacated by long-time Regent Chuck Hassebrook of Lyons, a Democrat who decided to make a bid for the U.S. Senate.
Copple pledged to keep tuition affordable, pursue economic development opportunities that provide good jobs for NU graduates and to work to make NU the "crown jewel" of the Big Ten athletic conference.
"It has been said that education is the great equalizer and Nebraska families deserve access to higher education in the Nebraska University system that is of the highest quality, obtainable in four years and is also affordable," he said.
Copple received his law degree from the NU College of Law in 1983. He also holds a business administration degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He serves on the University of Nebraska President's Advisory Committee, the Nebraska State Highway Commission and is chairman of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce.
He and his wife, Shirley, have two daughters and three grandchildren.
