Scam email was death threat

By Sam Womack

This email makes you wish for that "wealthy" Nigerian prince offering a big reward in exchange for a little monetary help.

At least he didn't threaten to kill you.

An Omaha woman recently told police she received an email from someone who claimed to have been hired to kill her. Unsurprisingly, only money would save her life.

The creepy message from "donkill4cash'' stated: "Someone who knows you wants you dead."

But the contract killer had a kind side — if the woman sent a total of $15,000 in two separate payments, then her life would be spared.

However, if she didn't respond, or if she contacted law officers: "I will extend the contract to include your family," the email warned.

While it's not an entirely new way to bilk victims out of money, Omaha police said, it's a good reminder that not all email scams are of the too-good-to-be-true variety.

Locally, anyone with questions about threatening or scam email should contact the Nebraska Attorney General's Office at 1-800-727-6432.

Anyone who receives such email is also urged to report it to the FBI's Internet crime complaint center at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. The FBI also has a list of the latest e-scams at http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/e-scams.
