PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State completed a four-game sweep over the UNO baseball team Monday by winning both ends of a doubleheader, 7-1 and 5-3.
In the opener, Washington State scored in each of the first three innings to take command. Derek Jones led the Cougars by going 3 for 3 with three RBIs. He was a single short of hitting for the cycle.
The Mavericks had eight hits in the opener but scored their lone run in the sixth. Tyler Splichal and Cory Buckley had two hits each for UNO.
In the nightcap, Washington State scored four times in the bottom of the fourth before UNO responded with three runs in the fifth to pull within 4-3. Scotty Donner delivered a two-run triple in the fifth.
UNO stranded two runners in the top of the seventh before the Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.
Beau Suponchick finished with three of UNO's four hits in the nightcap.
The doubleheader was delayed Saturday and Sunday due to inclement weather. The Mavericks now head to Seattle for a three-game series beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
