Free comics, artists, a screen star and more await comic book fans (and those interested in comics) on Saturday when Free Comic Book Day celebrates its 10th anniversary.
The event began in 2002 as an effort to get new readers into comic book stores.
Aside from giving away free comic books and special guests, local stores also hold sales on their merchandise.
All of the stores listed here are hosting Free Comic Book Day events. Here are some highlights:
Adam Baldwin, a star of “Chuck,” the sci-fi series “Firefly” and its film sequel “Serenity,” will appear to sign autographs, take pictures and meet fans at Krypton Comics, 2819 S. 125th Ave.
“Amazing Fantasy” No. 15 is the big prize for a charity drawing at Legend Comics, 5207 Leavenworth St. Spider-Man first appeared in this issue, which was released in 1962. The copy at Legend Comics is valued at $5,000, but the store is selling $5 tickets to win the issue. All proceeds go to Make A Wish Foundation.
Simpsons artist Mike Worley, who has drawn comics of the yellow-skinned animated TV stars, will appear at the Omaha location of Ground Zero, 4601 S. 50th St.
A big part of Free Comic Book Day is the free comics (duh!). Here are some of our favorites from the list. Find the whole list at freecomicbookday.com:
» “Mouse Guard, Labyrinth and Other Stories” hardcover — This free, 48-page book features stories from Archaia Entertainment's best writers and artists.
» “Star Wars/Serenity Flip Book” — You'll want to grab this one and have Adam Baldwin, one of the stars of “Serenity,” sign it.
» “Adventure Time/Peanuts Flip Book” — The popular adventure cartoon, “Adventure Time,” follows Finn and his magical dog, Jake. This one should be popular.
» “Avengers 12.1” — Reviews say that this comic book will wow casual and long-time fans alike. Anyone who likes “The Avengers” film and is interested in the comic books should give this one a try.
» “Diary of a Zombie Kid” — A kid in school who's also a zombie? Sounds funny.
» “Muqtatafaht” — An anthology of comic artists from the Middle East, “Muqtatafaht” showcases some unique styles.
» Thor HeroClix figure — This one isn't a comic. It's a miniature figure used in the HeroClix tabletop game where players get some superhero figurines and battle against their friends. The figure is free and exclusive to Free Comic Book Day.
