Traditional Mexican pastries, like these from International Bakery on South 24th Street, are a tasty Cinco de Mayo treat.

Go beyond tacos, burritos

« Food

When it comes to celebrating Cinco de Mayo, lots of Americans turn to the standards: chips and salsa, tacos and burritos
But if you travel to Mexico, or even to South 24th Street, you'll see far more than that.
Today, we're offering you some authentic food choices for your celebration. If it's at home, we included a trio of recipes you can try, and if you're headed to the city's official Cinco de Mayo festival, at La Plaza de La Raza at 25th and N Streets in South Omaha, you'll find vendors all day Saturday and Sunday selling at least a few of the things on our list. A handful of Omaha restaurants are celebrating with food and drink specials, too.
So kick back, sip a horchata and celebrate with something different this year.
