Stella's wins best burger

Stella's Bar & Grill took home the Nebraska Beef Council's second annual “Nebraska's Best Burger” title.

Stella's cheeseburger got enough nominations from online votes to make it to the top ten, and a panel of judges that did an anonymous taste test of all ten burgers chose Stella's as their favorite.

The restaurant, 106 S. Galvin Road in Bellevue, will get a plaque for its win and be featured by the Nebraska Beef Council in May as part of Nebraska Beef Month.

The judges' top five burgers were from Big Red Restaurant & Sports Bar, with locations in Lincoln, Omaha, Norfolk and Fremont; Tommy Colina's Kitchen in Omaha; Sinful Burger in Bellevue; and Runza Restaurants in various locations across Nebraska. Omaha steaks sponsors scholarships

Omaha Steaks is sponsoring five culinary arts scholarships through the James Beard Foundation.

The scholarships will annually be awarded to students pursuing culinary studies including cooking, baking, writing, nutrition, food studies, wine studies and hospitality management.

Students nationwide can apply for the scholarships, and one will be designated each year for a student at Omaha's Metropolitan Community College Culinary Arts Program.

Omaha Steaks owner and senior vice president Todd Simon said the partnership was a natural fit, because James Beard worked as an adviser in the past to Omaha Steaks, appearing in its advertising campaigns and creating recipes for cookbooks that the company still uses today.

Variety of veggies at farmers markets

Get your reusable tote bags ready, because the Omaha Farmers Market starts tomorrow.

The downtown market opens at 8 a.m. for its 19th season on the corner of 11th and Jackson Streets. It opens Sunday at 9 a.m. for its third year at Aksarben Village, 67th and Center Streets.

Shoppers will find prepared foods, crafts and early-season bedding plants, but also lots of asparagus, radishes, lettuce, green onions and spinach, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather.

The Old Market location has more than 100 vendors this year, and the Aksarben market has more than 75.

The Old Market location runs until 12:30 p.m. each Saturday and the Aksarben market runs until 1 p.m. each Sunday. Both end the weekend of Oct. 14.

The Village Pointe farmers market — now in its seventh year — is up and running, too, and operates Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 6. The shopping center is at 168th Street and West Dodge Road.

New Dickey's

Dickey's Barbecue is opening a second Lincoln location.

Franchise owner Will Carter said the new location will be at 1226 P St. and its phone number is 402-447-7757.

The other Lincoln location is at 2662 Cornhusker Highway.

Dickey's Barbecue offers a selection of meats, home-style sides and tangy barbecue sauce. All meats are slow-smoked on-site in each restaurant. Kids younger than 12 years old eat for free on Sundays, and the Dallas-based chain has more than 200 locations around the country.

Villagio Pizza now open in west Omaha

The restaurant will serve salads, pasta, appetizers and a variety of pizzas. Patio seating is open now and delivery will be an option soon.

Lot 2 wine dinner

Lot 2 is having a wine dinner in late May in collaboration with Jesse Becker, the former sommelier at the Boiler Room Restaurant.

Lot 2 will pair a four-course dinner with wines from Becker's company, Peripherique Wine Merchants, and the dinner will focus on Italian wine. Reservations are required for the dinner; for cost and more information, call 402-504-4200.

Zin Room celebrates one year

The Zin Room is celebrating one year in business with a weeklong celebration.

Events begin May 22 with a sake dinner that's $49 per person. May 23 is half-price wine night at the restaurant, May 24 features a supper club and live jazz, May 25 a chef's menu of two three-course meals for $35 per person and live music from Michael Lyon and on May 26 a special late-night party will be held, with details to be announced.

May 27 brings a second supper club and live music event and May 28 is customer appreciation night, which will include free passed appetizers in the Zin Room's loft with a minimum of one cocktail, beer or wine purchase. The special event that evening runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Nettie's celebrates 25th year

Nettie's Mexican Restaurant is celebrating 25 years in business this month with drink and dinner specials.

Nettie Escamilla-Vela, Abraham Vela and Kathy and Mike Boyles opened the restaurant May 15, 1987 and the family voted to name it after Nettie, as the restaurant uses her recipes. Nettie and Abe both died in 2005 but the family continues to run the restaurant.

Where to eat for Mother's Day

If you're looking for a place to treat your mom next weekend, there are a few specials going on.

Johnny's Italian Steakhouse is running a special Mother's Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The menu includes prime rib, apple dijon smoked ham, grand marnier French toast, an omelet station, fresh baked pastries and a dessert table, among other breakfast items. Reservations are recommended. Johnny's is at 305 N. 170th St. in the Village Pointe Shopping Center. For more information, call 402-289-9210.

Dante Ristorante Pizzeria is playing host to a three-course prix fixe brunch for moms. The $22 meal includes a free “momma mia” cocktail. Dante is at 168th Street and West Center Road. For reservations, call 402-932-3078.
