Three Titans picked for U.S. junior training team

Three members of the Papillion-La Vista South volleyball team have been chosen for the women’s junior national training team.

Twin sisters Amber and Kadie Rolfzen, both 6-foot-3 outside hitters, and setter Kelly Hunter were among the 23 athletes picked from 15 USA Volleyball regions. All three will be seniors this fall.

“It’s a great opportunity to train with really good kids,’’ Papio South coach Gwen Egbert said.

Members of the team will start training July 15 and compete in the USA Volleyball High

Performance Championships in Des Moines July 24 to 28. The roster will shrink to the 12 players who will make up the junior national team and compete at the women’s junior continental championship in Nicaragua in August.

The Rolfzens were the only players chosen who competed last year on the U.S. girls’ youth national team.

They made the final cut and competed at the world championships. Egbert said they both were better players when they returned.

“It’s a high level,’’ she said. “They learned how to compete, and they learned what it’s like to play at that level.’’

Two other Titan players will be at Des Moines, although at a level below the training team. Senior rightside hitter Olivia Schonewise and freshman Raegan LeGrand will train and play in the High Performance championships and then return home.

Schonewise plays for the Nebraska Elite. LeGrand competes for the Nebraska Juniors, as does the Rolfzens and Hunter.
