For our seventh cookie, Mary Vivian-Leidy of La Vista submitted a recipe that was passed down from her grandmother. These gooey bars are liberally coated in powdered sugar.
“My mom used to freeze them, and we would all get in trouble because the trail of powdered sugar would give us away,” Mary said.
4 cups crushed graham crackers
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 12 ounce package of chocolate chips
1 cup crushed nuts
3 cups powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Put graham crackers into a Ziploc bag and crush using a rolling pin to fine to medium pieces.
Mix graham crackers, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, baking powder, chocolate chips and nuts together (use a sturdy spoon). Spread in a 9 inch-by-13 inch pan sprayed with cooking spray.
Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
Run a knife around the edge when removed from oven and cool about 30 minutes.
Cut into squares and roll in powdered sugar.
Test kitchen notes: Mary said she uses walnuts when making these bars. I had pecans on hand so I use those and the bars tasted great. Mary also said she puts the nuts into the Ziploc bag and crushes them right along with the graham crackers.
I used much less than 3 cups of powdered sugar. I started with 1½ cups and didn't even use all of that.
