HDR Architecture gains German firm

As part of its plan to reach further into European markets, Omaha-based HDR Architecture has acquired TMK Architekten, a German firm known for its creative design of contemporary health buildings.

The new company will conduct business as HDR TMK and will be the hub for the global firm’s health care-related design programs in Europe, officials announced Tuesday.

TMK comes to the HDR family with nearly 200 employees in six German cities — Berlin, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Erfurt, Kiel and Leipzig.

Since it was founded more than 50 years ago, TMK has gained a reputation in the industry as an innovator in creating people-focused buildings that aid in the healing process. It has designed more than 1,500 health care projects throughout Europe, including large replacement hospitals, community clinics and surgical centers.

Doug Wignall, president of HDR Architecture, called the purchase “a huge step” — and a key part of HDR’s strategy to gain a stronger global presence. He said HDR also is looking at other acquisitions outside the U.S.

“HDR has made a commitment not only to designing projects all over the world and bringing the best ideas from around the globe to our clients, but also to establishing a permanent presence in strategic locations around the globe,” Wignall said. “We believe as architects that we change the world one building at a time.”

Guido Messthaler, senior partner with TMK Architekten, foresees an even stronger health care expertise that can help penetrate new markets.

“With access to HDR’s expertise and portfolio, we will also be able to further develop work in the science and technology and higher education markets,” he said.

HDR Architecture is a part of HDR Inc., the Omaha-based architecture, engineering and consulting firm with more than 8,000 professionals in 190 sites worldwide. The architecture practice has more than 1,300 professionals in 44 offices worldwide, including in Canada, China, the Middle East and Australia.

With the addition of TMK, officials say that more than 20 percent of HDR Architecture’s employees are located outside the U.S.
